The Windowcase window, with the texture list, a live preview and the border settings

What it does

Windowcase draws a textured frame around every window on your Mac. Every texture is generated on your Mac, so borders stay sharp at any size and follow windows instantly as you move and resize them.

Features

  • 14 textures, from walnut and marble to brushed aluminum, leather, carbon fiber and circuit board
  • A separate look for unfocused windows: no border, the same texture, or a different one
  • Adjustable thickness and corner style
  • Optional animations: a glint when a window gains focus, and a slow shimmer on metal textures
  • Hides automatically in Mission Control and in full-screen apps
  • Exclude apps such as games, video players or screen sharing
  • Switch textures automatically with light and dark mode, or on a day and night schedule
  • Lives in the menu bar

Requirements

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel. Windowcase does not need Accessibility or Screen Recording permission.

Privacy

Windowcase has no accounts, analytics or tracking. From 1.2.0 it contacts Polar to check your licence key, when you activate it and about once a week after that, and that is the only thing it ever sends anywhere. Your settings and everything else stay on your Mac.

Purchase and download

Payment is handled by Polar, which acts as the reseller and takes care of sales tax. After paying you get a download link and, from 1.2.0, a licence key by email, and you can download the app and find the key again at any time from Polar's customer portal. New versions are added there too. Windowcase has no built-in updater: it will not check for new versions or prompt you, so you pick them up from the portal when you want them.

Open source

Windowcase is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3. It is derived from JankyBorders by Felix Kratz. Your purchase pays for the signed, notarized app and supports its development. From 1.2.0 it asks for a licence key, which does not change that: the GPL entitles you to the source, and to a build of it without the key check. For the source code, write to the address below.
